96.5% of Nigerian internet users aged 16 and over use WhatsApp, more than any other platform, according to Krestel Digital's 2026 Nigeria social media report. Nigeria also leads Africa in WhatsApp Business downloads, with over 52 million, ahead of every other country on the continent, according to Yazi's WhatsApp penetration data.
That means your customer isn't waiting for your email. They're not scrolling for your ad. They're on WhatsApp right now, and it's the first place they'll look for you if they can.
Here's the part most small businesses miss: even conservative benchmarks put WhatsApp marketing messages at around a 68% open rate, while email sits at roughly 20 to 25%, according to AiSensy's roundup of WhatsApp benchmarks. If you're spending time crafting emails and ignoring WhatsApp, you're putting your effort into the channel your customer barely opens.
Why "just chatting on WhatsApp" isn't the same as using it properly
Most Nigerian businesses already have a WhatsApp number. Very few actually set it up as a business tool. That's the gap.
A proper WhatsApp Business setup gives you:
- A business profile with your name, address, hours, and what you sell, so a stranger trusts you before they've typed a single message.
- A product catalogue customers can browse without asking you "what do you sell?" for the hundredth time.
- Quick replies and automated responses for the questions you get every single day, so nobody waits three hours for "yes, we deliver to Wuse."
- A record of every conversation, so you don't lose track of who paid, who's waiting on delivery, and who asked a question you never answered.
None of this requires a big budget. It requires setting it up once, properly, and using it consistently.
Speed cuts both ways
More than half of WhatsApp messages get a reply within a minute, according to Bird's WhatsApp benchmarks. That's the advantage when your setup is ready for it. It's also the risk when it isn't: a customer asks a question at 11pm and never gets an answer, so they message your competitor instead, while their attention is still on their phone.
This is a channel that's already working for you. It just isn't built properly yet.
This is part of what our Social Media Management service covers: consistent, on-brand community management across every channel your customers actually use, WhatsApp included.
